Pave way for dialogue, says JDU

Imphal, July 12 2023: The State unit of Janata Dal (United) has urged the Central and Manipur Government to provide an avenue for the Meetei and Kuki leaders to initiate dialogue and pave a way forward to restore peace in Manipur.

Speaking to the media at its office at Palace Compound today, senior spokesperson of JD (U) Manipur Dr Nimaichand Luwang said that the Government has utterly failed to break the cycle of violence in Manipur.

Saying that nearly 150 people have been killed, thousands of people displaced and many have disappeared amid the violence in Manipur, Dr Nimaichand who is also a National council member of JD(U) continued that there are many unclaimed bodies at the morgues of RIMS and JNIMS too.

The violence in Manipur has taken a toll on everyone with no end in sight, he said and maintained that the Government however is still hesitating to take the suggestions of political parties, civil society organisations, intellectuals nor initiate any measure to douse the flame though the violence in Manipur has spiralled out of control.

Reminding Chief Minister N Biren of the statement he gave on monitoring the situation in valley by him and in hill districts by Union Home Minister Amit Shah shortly after he returned from New Delhi on June 26, Dr Nimaichand asked what solution has the Government brought to Manipur after monitoring the situation in hill and valley separately.

There is no peace in both the hill and valley districts while firing continues unabated, Dr Nimaichand said and added that tension is still high in Manipur even after all the assurances given by the Central and State leaders.

Saying that peace can only be brought to Manipur when the Meetei and Kuki leaders agree to hold dialogue and negotiate, Dr Nimaichand continued that it is the responsibility of the Government to provide an avenue for dialogue.

Reiterating that the Manipur Government has utterly failed to protect lives and properties, the JD(U) leader said that the Chief Minister needs to resign.

The Opposition parties are even afraid to demand a resignation of the Chief Minister as politics in Manipur has lately become very dirty and dangerous, Dr Nimaichand added.

Asking why the State Government is still not convening a special session of the Assembly, Dr Nimaichand continued that the BJP doesn't want to discuss Manipur violence in the Assembly.

Claiming that the Government seems to be dismantling bunkers mostly in valley districts alone, he urged the Government to do the needful.
