Awareness programme on 'Control, Containment & Eradication of African Swine Fever' held

Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services, Government of Manipur today organised a 1-Day State Level Awareness Programme on "Control, Containment & Eradication of African Swine Fever and Information of National Livestock Mission-Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP)" at Farmer's Training Hall, Veterinary Complex, Sanjenthong.
It was attended by Michael Achom, Secretary, Veterinary & AH; Dr Ng Ibotombi Singh, Director, Veterinary & AH; and RK Khogendrajit Singh, Joint Director (Planning), Veterinary & AH as presidium members.
The programme began with the lighting of lamp by the dignitaries followed by a welcome address delivered by Dr Sabitri Maibam, Spl (Bact), DI Lab.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Ng Ibotombi said that the pig farmers of the State have been suffering due to the present conflict coupled with the recent outbreak of African Swine Fever in Manipur.
He asserted that the Veterinary Department cannot completely control/ contain the spread of African Swine Fever without the support & cooperation of the pig farmers in particular and the public in general.
"The State Veterinary & Animal Husbandry Department confirmed the outbreak of ASF in Manipur on October 13, 2023.After months of hardwork and with the support of the public, the disease has been successfully contained/ controlled", he added.
RK Khogendrajit said following the outbreak of African Swine Fever in mid October last year, the Veterinary & AH Department identified 73 epicentres in 7 districts of Manipur.
"Till December 30, 2023, the Rapid Response Teams of the Veterinary Department destroyed 23,694 kilograms of contaminated feed and culled as many as 1781 pigs", he added.
He continued that under the National Action Plan, the teams carried out sanitisation and cleaning of farmers within the 73 epicentres and infected zones.
In the technical session, Dr Chirom Nishita Devi, Special (Para), Directorate of Veterinary & AH Services, delivered a lecture on the topic, "Information of NLM-EDP" while Dr Ng Ibotombi Singh elaborated on "Review of African Swine Fever, its Treatment & Control Measures" and Dr H Usharani Devi, Deputy Director, Directorate of Veterinary & AH Services spoke on "Bio-Security measures in controlling African Swine Fever" .
Dr Dilrash Mayanglambam, District Veterinary Officer, Imphal West, also spoke on "Control, Containment & Eradication of African Swine Fever as per National Action Plan- ASF Guidelines" .
Later, an interactive session with participating pig farmers was conducted.
