Mice torpidity reason for students' death: Joykumar

Imphal, September 27 2023: Former DGP and NPP national vice president N Joykumar has said that intelligence failure and inertia of the state forces led to the killing of students Hijam Linthoingambi and Phijam Hemanjit, who went missing since July 6 .

N Joykumar along with state NPP leaders visited residences of Linthoingambi and Hemanjit on Wednesday and shared pain and grief of the two bereaved families.

During the visit, the police-turned-politician told media persons that in-spite of large numbers of central forces deployed in Manipur in addition to state forces, majority of the forces do not execute their duties well but they remain as mute spectator to the mayhem.

Citing inputs from security agencies, Joykumar said state police personnel are intentionally disallowed from performing their duty well and even given order to retreat when they move to frontline areas.

While appealing to Kukis to help in tracing bodies of the two students on humanitarian ground, Joykumar expressed his displeasure over complete silence of Kuki civil and women organisations vis-a-vis killing of two students.

He recalled that entire people of the state irrespective of valley and hills condemned when video of two naked Kuki women went viral.

Meanwhile, decrying sluggishness of the police when the two students went missing on July 6, National People's Youth Front (NPYF), the youth wing of National People's Party (NPP), has criticised the government and investigating agencies for being reactive instead of being proactive.

Decrying the cold-blooded execution of the two students, NPYF members organised a sit-in protest at the party's Naoremthong office, here, on Wednesday.

Former deputy chief minister Y Joykumar, former minister N Mangi, ex-MLA S Subhaschandra, NPP general secretary organisation RK Rameshwar, party leader L Sanjay, NPYF president Laitonjam Jayananda and other youth leaders participated in the protest.

A two-minute silence was also observed in memory of the two victims.

Interacting with the media at the protest site, Jayananda said that the government was urged by family members, general public and various organisations to trace and rescue the teens when they went missing.

However, the state police did not do much and today, the government is saying that the case has been handed over to CBI only after the photos went viral.

The two teens could have been rescued if the government and its investigating agencies have been proactive, he said.

He also strongly condemned the Kuki militants, who executed the innocent students and demanded the government to award capital punishment to the perpetrators.

On the other hand, people from across the state raised their voice against the naked parade of two Kuki women.

Ironically, no other community in the state is raising their voice against the execution of two students.

Even the so-called intellectual circle of Kuki community is remaining silent as if humanity has left their souls, Jayananda said.
