MHRC takes note of Leimakhong oil spill

The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has registered a suo-moto case in connection with the Leimakhong oil spill incident.
The bench of the Commission comprising Chairperson Justice UB Saha and Member KK Singh took up the case based on a report this paper published on January 11 .
Heavy fuel was leaked from Leimakhong Power Station in a suspected act of sabotage on January 10 .
The fuel spilled into several streams and Rivers.
As the matter is relating to safety and security of large number of human lives and their rights, "we want to know" who have been given the authority by the Chief Minister to take steps for safety of the lives of people, and what steps have been taken up, said the MHRC while taking up the case.
The MHRC directed the State Government to inform on the steps that have been taken up by various authorities including the team of NIT, Manipur and an SIT, led by Ashutosh Sinha, Addl DGP (Intelligent), constituted to investigate the case.
The MHRC further asked the DGP Manipur to investigate the leakage and find out the group(s) or people behind the incident and book them.
The Commission listed the matter for next hearing on January 19 .
