The Thangjalet Memorial Football Tournament, organised by 27 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Red Shield Division in commemoration of (L) Hav Thangjalet Haokip of Churachandpur, has been inaugurated today.
The daredevil Non Commissioned Officer of to 11 Assam Rifles while deployed in Tamenglong district was personally responsible for eliminating four insurgent cadres in a fierce operation on the night of May 13 May, 2009, said a PIB (DW) release.
The soldier made the supreme sacrifice conforming to highest traditions of the Indian Security Forces and was awarded Shaurya Chakra (posthumously) for his conspicuous bravery, undoubting courage and fearless determination in fighting the terrorists.
The event to honour the warrior will continue till September 23.It was made open to the local club with vide publicity for over a period of two months and received an encouraging response with the draw of lots held on September 7, the release added.
The inaugural match between Lamka Sports Club and Saidan Youth Club commenced on arrival of 26 Sector AR Commander Brig Surendra Mehta at the public ground.
A ceremony of presentation of a memoir of Late Hav Thangjalet Haokip the guests and team captains by Mrs Hatkhochin, w/o Thangjalet while the match began with the ceremonial kick off by Master T William Lalgunlen Haokip.
