Governor, Gurbachan Jagat today expressed regret on hearing of patients being referred to private hospitals by RIMS citing non-availability and malfunctioning of equipment.
He was speaking as chief guest at the function held in connection with the 39th foundation day of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).
"It is sad to read in newspapers that patients are being referred to private hospitals from RIMS as equipments are not available or are malfunctioning," the Governor said adding that RIMS being the number one referral hospital should ensure that no patient is referred to other hospitals and should provide the best medical care possible.
The chief guest expressed confidence that all concerned in the institute will put their best to make RIMS, Imphal an excellent centre for medical education, research, health and medicare in the country.
The basic objective of this Institute is to impart quality medical education and ameliorate the health conditions of the people of the North Eastern States, specially in the rural areas where adequate health and medicare facilities are not available, Gurbachan said.
He expressed gladness to learn that RIMS starting as an institute catering to the seven North Eastern States except Assam, students from different parts of the country under the all India quota are today enrolled both for under graduate and post graduate courses.
It fulfills all the statutory norms of the Medical Council of India.
RIMS has produced a total of 2,508 doctors till March 2009 since its inception.
Besides the under graduate and post graduate course, a new Nursing College was set up in December 2009 with an intake capacity of 50 students.
Superspeciality courses in Urology and Plastic Surgery have also been started.
A new department of Immuno Haematology was opened on July 22, 2009. Delivering his speech as president of the foundation day celebration, Prof C Amuba, Vice-Chancellor Manipur University said that RIMS is one of premier medical institutes of the country and that the new director will push forward the Institute.
On the occasion, Director of RIMS, W Gyaneshwor released an annual report of the Institute and the Governor released a journal of the Medical Society and a magazine "Remedy" published by the RIMS Students' Union while the president released a Newsletter of the Institute.
