Customary court slaps Rs 25,000 fine on rape accused

The Tangkhul Naga Long Karot (court) highest traditional tribunal of Tangkhul community today imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 against a man who is accused of raping a housewife.
Prem Thapa (26) of Shangching village was penalised by the Court after conducting a trial through traditional water immersion at Nungshang River, Ukhrul.
Both the appellant and the respondent were immersed under water.
As per the tradition, the one who floats first is held guilty of the charge.
The 'chief justice' of TNL Karot, Mawonshang administered the water immersion rite.
He was assisted by two judges in the presence of TNL executives as witnesses.
The family members of the plaintiff and the respondent were also present during the trial.
