Imphal, January 29 2014:
All Manipur Ethical Socio-Cultural Organisation (AMESCO) is set to begin a campaign to discard alien words from Manipuri language.
Speaking to reporters in a press conference held at its Keishampat office, AMESCO president Nando Samjetshabam said that Manipuri, which is the lingua-franca of the State, is a rich language.
However, constant inclusion of alien words has put the language in a complete disarray, he said.
Nando opined that borrowing words from other languages has also diluted the tradition and identity of Manipuri society.
As such the organisation would campaign to stop borrowing words from other languages and deliberate use of alien words in Manipuri, he added.
Saying that AMESCO would organise a seminar in the first week of February in this regard, Nando added that the organisation would conduct awareness programmes in different districts to translate the recommendations of the seminar into action.
