On their two-day visit to the State, members of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Commerce arrived at Imphal today.
Talking to The Sangai Express at Tulihal Airport, Committee Member and Rajya Sabha MP Birendra Prasad Baishaya said that the purpose of their visit was to assess the scenario of industrial growth and infrastructure of the State.
He added that the committee would also analyse the means of working out an industrial policy of the State considering the changing global scenario.
Birendra Prasad Baishaya said that Manipur is still far lagging behind in industrial growth comparing to other States.
He mentioned absence of railway link and waterways and inadequate power supply as main hindrances to industrial growth of the State.
Saying that the Centre had provided special packages of fund for the development of industrial sector in 2007 to North East States, the MP said that the committee would also look into the steps the State Government had taken up in this regard.
The committee which comprises of five Rajya Sabha MPs and four Lok Sabha MPs will meet the representatives of Manipur Handloom and Handrcrafts Development Corporation, Manipur Industrial Development Corporation, Manipur Food Industries Corporation Limited tomorrow.
They will also interact with the representatives of Associated Manipur Chamber of Commerce, Manipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Manipur Entrepreneurs Association.
The team will Imphal after meeting the Chief Secretary on January 31 .
