Imphal, January 29 2014:
Under construction tunnel number 27 of the Jiribam-Tupul railway project (Imphal-Silchar Road) came under attack from suspected hill based militants who fired two lethod shells yesterday.
According to police sources, the incident occurred at Tupul under Noney Police Station in Tamenglong district about 1.40 pm.
No casualties were reported in the attack.
Suspected tribal militants fired two rounds of lethod shells at the construction site.
However, only one shell exploded after it landed on an electric generator, the police sources said, adding none was hurt in the blast, and that nothing happened to the generator too.
It appears the militants had attacked the tunnel over huge monetary demand, they said.
Tunnel-27 of Jiribam-Tupul railway line is guarded by personnel of 6th India Reserved Battalion (IRB).
It is located just a few metres from a CRPF post.
Noney police has registered a case over the incident.
