'Thief' beaten to death, Mayai Lambi blocked

After an alleged thief was beaten to death, police pulled up two individuals who were reportedly involved in thrashing the man to death following which people blocked Mayai Lambi road today in protest against the police action.
According to information culled from the spot, one Md Habib (30) s/o late Amu of Irong Makha Leikai was rounded up by local people of Chabung Company at around 2.30 am today.
In addition to lifting an LPG cylinder from the house of Yumnam Khomei (35) s/o Ningthemjao, Md Habib was stealing goods from a grocery shop of one Lousambam Indrakumar (25) s/o Mani after breaking into the shop.
Habib was caught red handed and all the angst caused by similar instances of theft in the past was unleashed against him.
The crowd thrashed Habib blue and black before he was taken to a private clinic at Mayang Imphal but he succumbed to the injuries.
Habib reportedly came with some accomplices but they managed to flee away.
Later at around 9.30 pm, Yumnam Khomei and Lousambam Santosh (25) s/o Leishang were pulled up by a team of Mayang Imphal police station in connection with the fatal assault.
Taking strong exception to the police action, people of Chabung Company blocked Mayai Lambi.
Yumnam Khomei is a VDF personnel attached to Mayang Imphal PS and he informed the police station about the mob attack on Habib.
It was Lousambam Santosh who first noticed Habib's act of thievery.
On the other, Habib and his accomplices assaulted one Asem Ningthoubi (43) s/o late Ibobi before they fled away.
Ningthoubi sustained injuries on the head and he was taken to a hospital.
He underwent 10 stitches on the head.
There have been many instances of the loss of solar lamps, suction pipes, water pumpsets, Honda Activa scooter, Kinetic Honda scooter and also poultry.
Habib's body has been deposited at RIMS mortuary.
