Imphal, February 15 2023:
Referring to the prohibition on the construction of an intake pump along the Iril River at Top Khongnangmakhong, Imphal East, a Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) official has raised questions on the prohibition imposed on the construction of the intake pump.
It may be noted that the prohibition on construction was imposed by Kshetri Iril Mapal Youth Club (KIYC) with the claim that the construction work was denuding the bank of Iril River.
Speaking to this reporter, the PHED official on conditions of anonymity shared that the intake pump received funding to the tune of Rs 3.7 crore from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) .
The intake pump, which is 40% complete, was originally set up as the older intake pump under Porompat Water Supply Scheme could not adequately supply water to the surrounding areas.
Construction on the intake pump began in October 2021 and KIYC imposed their restriction on September 8, 2022 and since then construction has been halted for roughly 5 months, he said.
The official also refuted the claim that construction of the intake pump had caused the wearing away of the river bank, adding that there is no connection between the two.
Further, he stated that these issues must be addressed by the Water Resources Department and Public Works Department.
As such, he sought the co-operation of KIYC and the residents of the area to ensure completion of the intake pump before the advent of the rainy season and help them provide the people with adequate water supply.
