Imphal, February 15 2023:
Condemning the manner in which Manipur police barged into the residence of Manipur Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) president Ningthoujam Popilal, Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader and former chief minister O Ibobi has termed the police act as insanely barbaric.
The CLP leader along with other members of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) on Wednesday visited the residence of Popilal to attend the last ritual ceremony of the MPYCC president's grandmother, who breathed her last on Tuesday.
Addressing media persons at Popilal's residence, O Ibobi said that the assault on BJP spokesperson Suresh-kumar and BJYM secretary Alex by unknown people is condemned by the Congress party.
If at all the police suspect Popilal's involvement in the assault case, they could have called him to the police station and questioned him in a proper manner.
However, the act of barging into the house of Popilalat Phayeng as if he was a terrorist was very unfortunate and condemned in the strongest terms.
"The police could be well aware of who were involved in the case.
But as Congress party has never done anything wrong, the party will always stand for the truth," he added.
MPCC president K Meghachandra, who was also present on the occasion, informed that Popilal has left his house not as an absconder but because of the atrocities committed by the Manipur police.
It is very unfortunate that the police are hunting for Popilal without knowing in what and in which case he has been involved.
He further informed that ever since the live discussion programme broadcast on a local TV channel on February 8, various attacks have been carried out on the leaders and office of the Congress party.
Popilal had even lodged a complaint to the police regarding the incident of that day and the CCTV footage has clearly shown that Popilal was at home during the incident of assault on the BJYP leaders.
Since a case has been taken up, an anticipatory bail has been applied, the hearing of which will be conducted on February 16, he revealed, while adding that the government should provide a specific clarification regarding the incident and withdraw the charges levelled against Popilal.
He also asked what role and initiative the government will take up over the untimely demise of Popilal's grandmother who passed away following the police action at his residence.
Popilal also condemned the act of the police which led to passing away of his grandmother.
