Two arrested for forging land document

Thoubal district police on Wednesday arrested two people including a retired settlement officer for forging a land document (patta) to receive compensation of around Rs 13 lakh from the government in connection with expansion of the National Highway (NH)-102 (Imphal-Moreh road).
The two arrested people have been identified as erstwhile assistant settlement and survey officer -VII (AS&SO-VII) Moirangthem Ningthem Singh (62), son of (late) M Mani Singh of Heirok Part 1 Heitupokpi, who retired from service on January 31 this year, and Irom Tomba Singh (64), son of (late) I Chandradas Singh of Thoubal Achouba Keithel Makha, who posed as the supposed land owner.
Briefing media persons regarding the case, Thoubal superintendent of police (SP) Jogeschandra Haobijam disclosed that Directorate of Settlement and Land Records, Imphal AS&SO-I Pangambam Yaitongba had filed a case at Thoubal police station on Tuesday after which investigation was launched and the two accused consequently arrested.
They have been charged of forging a 'Patta' and receiving the compensation for land plot which was mentioned in documents submitted to the department as affected by the NH 102 expansion.
However, during the investigation it came to light that the highway expansion did not affect the said land at all, informed the SP.
He continued that the two accused conspired to misappropriate the compensation procedures by forging the 'Patta' of a land located at Thoubal Achouba in the name of I Tomba which was actually owned by one Ningthoujam Ranjit Singh of Khangabok Part II Khullakpam Leikai.
Based on the forged 'Patta', compensation was received/ withdrawn by I Tomba in two instalments with the misappropriated amount shared between the two accused, the SP Thoubal said.
The police officer also asserted that further legal action will be initiated up against the accused duo, while appealing to public not to indulge in such forgery for getting compensation.
