Kangpokpi, December 09 2015:
The Kuki Students' Organization, GHQs and All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) have decided to extended the ultimatum of launching democratic forms of agitation in connection with the State Government order, dated March 11, 2013 from December 10 till December 16 today.
The decision to extend the ultimatum came after a joint meeting today between representatives of the student bodies and representatives of Board of Secondary Education, Manipur on the reintroduction of Additional English in the scheme of study in classes IX and X .
The joint meeting was chaired by Board of Secondary Education, Manipur, Secretary Dr Ch Sarat.
A joint statement of the student bodies signed by Seiboi Haokip, general secretary, KSO-GHQs and Alexander Huten, general secretary, ANSAM said that the meeting today decided to hold talks again on or before December 16 and added that as the meeting has understood the practical difficulties of the students' community and committed to resolve the issue, the student bodies extended the ultimatum to December 16 which was earlier scheduled on December 10 .
It further said that the issue is not about extending the option of Additional English to students whose mother tongues are not in the list of MIL curriculum for one or two academic sessions.
"The demand is for the right to permanently exercise the option of Additional English by all students", it added.
Mention may be made that the student bodies had earlier announced its decision to launch democratic forms of protest in the event of the State Government's failure to revoke its order dated March 11, 2013 which removed Additional English from the scheme of study in Classes IX and X under State Board on or before December 10 .
The All Naga Students' Association, Manipur (ANSAM) alone had also reiterated its stand to launch democratic forms of protest if the State Government/BSEM adamantly denies the right to exercise option of Additional English on a permanent basis.
