House likely to take up NRC, census issue

With the people's movement for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before commencing census operations gaining momentum, the State Assembly is likely to discuss the issue of NRC in its forthcoming session scheduled from September 2 .
Notably, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has summoned the 8th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly from 11 am on September 2 .
Manipur Legislative Assembly Secretary Rohit Sapam issued a notification to this effect today.
The number of sittings or days and the agenda of the session will be decided by the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) .
Well placed sources said that the burning issue of NRC and census operations may be deliberated during the session.
On the other hand, the State Government has already informed the Centre about the possible disturbance to the law and order situation on account of the people's movement for updating the NRC before processing with census operations.
After threadbare deliberation on the issue of NRC and census, the State Assembly may adopt some new resolutions, said the sources.
With the people's movement for updating the NRC gaining momentum since the last couple of days, Governor Ajay Kumar is scheduled to leave for Delhi on Tuesday to discuss the issue with Central leaders, according to the sources.
Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam left Imphal yesterday and he may also discuss the issue with relevant officials and Central leaders at Delhi today.
Incidentally, ex-Chief Minister N Biren went to Delhi yesterday following a call from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
