Imphal, August 17 2026:
Even as trucks are lined up along a 20-kilometre stretch along the Jiribam-Assam border, a total of 644 loaded trucks and tankers left Jiribam for Imphal today.
The 644 loaded vehicles are being escorted by three security convoys.
The 644 vehicles include 469 goods carrying trucks and 175 fuel tankers.
While the first convoy left Jiribam at around 6.25 am, the last convoy left at around 9 am .
The Transporters' and Divers' Council (TDC) has meanwhile appreciated the Government for the increase in the number of security convoys which has allowed bulk movement of stranded vehicles.
TDC president Hijam Ranjit said the increase in the number of security convoys would help ease congestion at Jiribam and Assam's border area.
With vehicles still stranded at the border area, drivers and handymen are facing immense hardship and difficulties.
Increasing the CRPF companies engaged in escort duty to 10 from 8 will further help ease the congestion and enhance transport, he said.
Notably, the TDC had earlier served an ultimatum to the Government to increase the number of convoys along the route.
It had warned the Government of moving the stranded vehicles in bulk with or without security from Monday.
The increase in the number and size of convoys came days after a stranded driver from Bihar identified as Nageena Kumar Mahato was found dead inside a truck in the Assam-Manipur border area on August 12 .
