International breast cancer awareness campaign held

A one-day awareness programme on early detection of breast cancer was jointly organized by Shija Breast & Thyroid Clinic and Community Health Centre (CHC), Wangoi under District Health Society, Imphal West at CHC, Wangoi today.
A press release issued by Shija Hospitals & Research Institute informed that the awareness programme has been organized under National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) in connection with "International Breast Cancer Awareness Month, October 2021" to raise awareness regarding signs, symptoms, risk of breast cancer, and its treatment.
Dr Ajit Lukram, Senior Consultant, Shija Breast & Thyroid Clinic was the chief guest and main resource person of the event, Dr Akoijam Sunita Devi, Radiotherapist was the Guest of Honour and Dr Ningthoujam Sushila Devi, Medical Officer-in-Charge, CHC, Wangoi, presided the program and they all emphasized on the importance of early detection of breast cancer and how early detection can save precious lives.
Breast cancer awareness booklet printed in Manipuri and subsidized X-ray mammogram coupons for breast cancer screening at Shija Hospital were distributed to the audience.
More than 100 people attended the event.
The event also conducted a free consultation service and screening of breast cancer for the patients at the venue, continued the press release.
Dr Ajit Lukram spoke about breast cancer and interacted with the audience.
He stated that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women and it is the leading cause of death, caused by cancer in women.
Breast cancer patients achieve maximum survival rates when the cancer is detected early followed by timely treatment.
Patients having swelling, pain, itchiness, skin thickening, redness, difference in size of the breasts, family history of breast cancer, change in the appearance or discharge from the nipple and swelling in the armpit must consult with a healthcare expert at the earliest, he added.
It may be noted that October is International Breast Cancer Awareness month and Shija breast & Thyroid Clinic is also participating in the global movement as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.
