Imphal, December 19 2013:
Employees of Transport Office, Imphal East have been working amidst toxic emissions, according to some of the staff.
Interacting with some media persons who went to DTO, Imphal East office at Mantripukhri (near STPI) today, the employees said that emissions from the PWD hot mix plant installed there on the plot of Transport Department have polluted the atmosphere of the surroundings to an alarming level.
On the other hand, DTO RK Ranjit elaborated on the activities of the office.
Although infrastructure of the office are in very bad shape, the office has been adding Rs 15 lakh at the minimum to the State Exchequer every month.
The office collected Rs 1.17 crore from April till November this year.
This enormous task of collecting revenue was done by just four staff, Ranjit said.
The office was once a big room but it was partitioned into several smaller rooms so that employees can carry out their different activities without disturbing each other.
The office is also conduction vehicle smoke emission test.
There is a limit to the level of unwanted emission released by newly manufactured vehicles.
As fixed by the Government of India, (Carbon Monoxide) emission level for four-wheeler petrol-run vehicles should be 3 per cent or less and it is 4.5 per cent or less for three wheelers petrol-run vehicles.
For diesel vehicles, it is 60 to 75 per cent under full load acceleration and up to 65 per cent under free acceleration.
If emissions from vehicles contain exceed 3.5 per cent hydrocarbon, 18 per cent Nitrogen and 14 per cent Carbon monoxide, the vehicles may be seized, said RK Ranjit.
People have been complaining about diesel autos but their emission is within the permissible limit.
"As for the noise pollution they caused, it is not our subject", he said.
"People seeking driving licences have a wrong notion about the Transport Office.
They seemed to have forgotten that they are coming to the office to attend examination", he remarked.
BSF personnel posted at Koirengei in 2011 who were in learner stage by that time gave the final exam today for issuing driving licences, Ranjit added.
