State ranks 5th in tobacco consumption: Dr Komolini

Imphal, December 19 2013:
State Nodal Officer of National Tobacco Control Programme Dr Komolini has said that Manipur ranks 5th among Indian states with high consumption rate of tobacco products.
She was speaking as a resource person during a one-day district level orientation workshop on "Implementation of National Tobacco Control Programme in Imphal West" jointly organized by District Tobacco Control Cell, CMO, Imphal West and Educational & Social Upliftment Organization at conference hall of Imphal West DC Office, Lamphelpat here today.

Dr Komolini further said that the national rate for tobacco consumption is 35 percent, but the State ranks 5th with a higher rate of 54 percent.
Such figure is very alarming and it would have serious implication on the public health, she noted.
The Nodal Officer also appealed to the people to abstain from consuming cancer-causing tobacco products and lead a healthy life.
The workshop was also attended by Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West K Radhakumar, CMO Imphal West Dr Bimola Kumari, ADM Dr Nivedita and S Nimaichand of Educational & Social Upliftment Organization.
