Imphal, December 19 2013:
Almost 90 per cent of the beneficiaries of the Old Age Pension Scheme have opened their bank accounts and the Government has been working to allot account numbers to pensioners who have opened their bank accounts but are yet to receive account numbers, stated Social Welfare Minister AK Mirabai.
Responding to a call attention motion raised by MLA L Ibomcha regarding implementation of Central sponsored schemes in the State, Mirabai said that banks have little interest in opening bank accounts for pensioners at zero balance.
Pension amount of more than Rs 1484 lakh has been released and the same has been deposited with banks.
Problems encountered during distribution of pensions are being monitored by a State level bankers committee.
The department is also working to lift due quantities of rice and dal which could not be lifted in time due to certain problems pertaining to transport contractors.
Due efforts are being put in to provide necessary food grains to Anganwadi centres, Mirabai said.
Earlier raising the motion, Ibomcha said that the State Government is unable to implement many central sponsored schemes properly and mothers as well as children have not been provided the food items they are entitled to for the past many months.
Like children, aged beneficiaries of the Anna Purna scheme have been denied their due shares of rice, Ibomcha said.
