Imphal, December 04 2014 :
Lei Ingkhol Youth Development Organisation (LIYDO) has urged the State Government to conduct a fresh survey of the area to identify the exact number of affected families.
Speaking at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club, LIYDO publicity secretary A Sajan said that although the locality has 170 families, the earlier survey identified only 110 families as genuine households for rehabilitation.
As such, members of 60 families would be rendered homeless if they are not rehabilitated through a fresh survey, he added.
Saying that many of the members of these families are TB and Leprosy patients, S Sajan urged the Government to include these 60 families in the list of households to be rehabilitated.
He added that it is unfortunate that some people think that yesterday's eviction drive was instigated by a case filed by some individuals at the High Court of Manipur.
Clarifying that no such case was filed in the Court, S Sajan said that they had however lodged a complaint in the Court seeking a directive to equally compensate the affected families.
Laikhuram Bhogen, who tried to immolate himself during yesterday's eviction drive, was also present at the press conference.
Expressing discontentment over some people's claim that he is not a resident of Lei Ingkhol but an outsider, Bhogen clarified that he did not represent the local club or the committee in his protest.
Bhogen added that his protest was a sudden outburst fuelled by the notion that the residents would become homeless if the houses are pulled down.
