Imphal, December 04 2014 :
Banking operations in the State came to a grinding halt as bank employees staged a one-day protest in response to United Forum of Bank Unions' (UFBU) call for a relay stir demanding immediate implementation of wage revision today.
Under the aegis of UFBU Manipur State, employees of different banks of the State staged a sit-in-protest in front of State Bank of India, MG Avenue branch from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm.
UFBU Manipur State convenor S Indrakumar said that representatives of the union met Central Government officials regarding employees' salary on November 1 .
He added that the relay strike was a fallout of Central Government's denial to hike the salary of bank employees.
Indrakumar said that UFBU would object Central Government's move to abolish Bank Nationalist Act 1969 and 1980 and State Bank of India Act 1955 in an attempt to privatise public sector banks with the constitution of PJ Nayak Committee.
He added that 10 lakh public sector bank employees across the Nation would go on stir phase wise in south, north, east and west zones.
Saying that the relay stir commenced on November 12 last, Indrakumar said that UFBU would launch an indefinite strike across the country from January next year if their demand for implementation of wage revision is not fulfilled.
The stir would largely affect not only Indian banks but also foreign banks, he added.
