While claiming that the land acquired for the proposed smart city in Chandel district falls within the boundary of Mangkang Village, its Chief N Laban has appealed to the authorities concerned to follow proper procedure and issue notification to the Village Authority if the Government wishes to acquire land for the project.
According to a press statement issued by the Chief of Mangkang Village N Laban, Mangkang Village in Chandel district is inhabited by majority of Moyon tribe, which is one of the oldest tribes settling in hill areas, particularly in Chandel district having its own customs and traditions.
The chiefs of Moyon villages are not hereditary but elected ones.
The Chief of Mangkang Village can never exercise power arbitrarily as done by the hereditary chiefs of other tribes.
Mangkang Village is recognized by the Government and its chief has been elected from time to time.
The village is located along the Indo-Myanmar border and it is bounded Indo-Myanmar border in the east, Phephak Chingtek in the west, Lokchou River in the north and Ngousilok in the south, it said.
The statement further said that due to ethnic clashes, some of the villagers of Mangkang left the village and moved to safer places.
However, the village is still in existence and its chief is still exercising his duties by delivering all government schemes to the villagers.
The Village Chief also lamented the claims and counter-claims of various groups which are trying to take undue advantage from the land proposed for the smart city.
