Imphal, October 19 2022:
Horticulture and Soil Conservation Minister Letpao Haokip has stated that farmers in hill districts think poppy plantations are more productive as they are not provided other high yielding crops.
Today, the first phase of seeds of winter crops were distributed to select farmers under the Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH) at the Directorate of Horticulture and Soil Conservation at Sanjenthong.
At the function, the Minister said that the Directorate must constantly reach out to farmers, especially in hill districts and provide seeds of high yielding horticulture crops to them so as to discourage poppy plantations.
Letpao also assured that the Government will provide all possible assistance in procuring high quality seeds of horticulture crops from other States.
Saying that the Government has been carrying out an intensive drive against drug menace, Letpao appealed to all farmers to do away with poppy plantations and plant high yielding crops which are suitable to Manipur soil so as to improve the economy of the State.
He also advised the officials concerned to be very careful while storing the seeds for distribution to prevent wastage.
"Why should we buy crops from others when there is abundant high yielding crops in the State," he noted.
During the function, sprinklers were also distributed by the Engineering unit of the Directorate.
Additional Chief Secretary P Vaiphei and Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Honey Chara also attended the programme.
