Imphal, April 16 2023:
Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo inaugurated a Parivartan Centre under See A Million campaign at the campus of Welfare Association for the Blind Manipur (WABM) at Takyel, today.
Altogether 11 visually impaired meritorious individuals were also felicitated during the launch of the digital literacy lab.
The centre will give digital training to the visually impaired.
Speaking as the chief guest, H Dingo said that the initiative taken up by the NGO Enable India to open its centres in different parts of the country so as to let the visually impaired persons live productively using modern technology is commendable.
H Dingo said that he would like to call people with disabilities as people with special abilities instead as many of them can do things which even a normal person can't.The Social Welfare Minister also stated that every person irrespective of their privilege or disadvantage must leave behind something which will benefit the future generations.
WABM secretary Konsam Sadananda, delivering the keynote address, stated that the main objective of the digital literacy lab is to empower the visually impaired and transform them into active citizens and Nation builders.
Parivartan Centre will act as a One Stop Centre for the visually impaired and contribute in bringing about an inclusive society, he added.
Sadananda continued that even people with visual impairment can take the benefit of modern technology such as the internet, email, applications, e- payment systems and other digital platforms if they get proper training.
He further stated that a six month digital literacy training programme will be held under the See A Million campaign.
Saying that there are many families who see the blind as a burden, Sadananada reasoned that there, however, are many visually impaired people who excel in sports, art and academically. The 11 visually impaired people felicitated today include PhD holders, Assistant Manager of bank and a bronze medallist of National Blind Sports Championship among others, he added.
The programme organised by WABM in association with Enable India, Bengaluru was also attended by Deputy Director (Disability) of the Social Welfare Department AS Robinson; founder of Enable India Shanti Raghavan and Spastic Society Manipur secretary Laishram Tokendra (Ricky) .
