Bishnupur, April 16 2023:
The Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol staged a sit-in protest at Irengbam Mamang Makha Leikai Community Hall, Bishnupur district this afternoon at 1 pm .
According to a statement, today's protest is a continuation of CADA's prolonged democratic agitation against the Cabinet decision to legalise alcohol taken on September 20, 2022 .
The sit-in protest was jointly staged by All Manipur Women Social Reformation & Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj), Irengbam Mamang Makha Nupi Lup and CADA.
The protestors carried many placards with messages such as "Alcohol legalisation cannot be enforced", "How can alcohol abuse be stopped after lifting prohibition when it could not be curbed during prohibition?", "Can human lives be bartered with money?", "Is good quality liquor not injurious to health or does it not lead to crime?", "Enforce a complete ban on alcohol", "Is legalising alcohol the only way for the State to earn revenue?", "Is it logical to launch War on Drugs campaign but lift prohibition on alcohol?" etc.
The protestors also raised slogans expressing their dissent against the Cabinet decision and calling for revocation of alcohol legalisation.
