Imphal, April 16 2023:
After a brief hiatus, the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur (STDCM) has resumed its activity demanding enlistment of Meetei/Meitei in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list of the Constitution.
Today, a seven member team of STDCM led by its president Dhiraj Yumnam called on Outer MP (Lok Sabha) Dr Lorho S Pfoze at the latter's quarters at Lamphel and submitted a memorandum to convince those who object their demand, specially the All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) .
A press release issued by STDCM general secretary K Bhogendrajit said that they have explained to the MP why Meetei/Meitei must be given tribal status in the memorandum.

As per the STDCM, the memorandum highlighted that the Meetei/Meitei is not recognised as a ST despite fulfilling all the criteria and the uncertain future which the ethnic group will face if no Constitutional safeguard is given to them.
Continuing that the Meetei/Meitei will likely become a minority on its own ancestral land if the issue of demographic imbalance is not taken seriously, the Committee appealed to Dr Lorho S Pfoze to convince the ATSUM and make them realise the position of Meetei/Meitei in contemporary Manipur.
The STDCM also stated that ATSUM launching a movement to stand against the demand of Meetei/Meitei even outside Manipur apart from simply voicing their concern may affect the brotherly relation between hill and valley people.
The Committee went on to reason that a better relationship will prevail among the indigenous groups if Meetei/Meitei is given the ST tag.
Saying that a proper discussion can be held with the Government if a section of people is worried about the job and other reservations, STDCM continued that a policy can be formulated to maintain the quota being received by tribals in the ST list as done in neighbouring Assam, Nagaland and Meghalaya even after the addition of Meetei/Meitei in the ST list.
The Committee also appealed to the Outer MP to persuade the State Government to send the reports sought by the Centre.
Notably, STDCM has already submitted similar memoranda to majority of the valley MLAs except Chief Minister N Biren Singh and few others.
Initiated by STDCM nearly a decade back, the movement to grant tribal status to Meetei/Meitei has been getting support from the likes of World Meetei Council, Kangleipak Kanba Lup, based student organisations, CSOs etc but the State Government hasn't said anything about sending the latest ethnography and socioeconomic reports which is necessary to consider the demand till date.
