Consultation prog deliberates on POCSO Act

A one day State level consultation programme on implemen-tation of POCSO Act 2012 was held today at City Convention Centre, Palace Compound.
The programme organized by the High Court of Manipur to commemorate the implementation of POCSO Act 2012 was attended by Chief Justice of High Court of Manipur Sanjay Kumar as chief guest.
Social Welfare Minister Heikham Dingo, Justice MV Muralidharan, Justice A Bimol, Advocate General Lenin Hijam and Director of Manipur Judicial Academy Kh Nobin were the guests of honour.
At the programme, Chief Justice Sanjay Kumar stated that instances of sexual assault against minors must be reported to the authorities concerned as soon as possible.

As per the provision of the Act, names and identities of victims of rape and sexual assault, however, should not be disclosed or revealed, he added.
The Chief Justice went on to state that altogether 47221 cases of POCSO are pending in the country currently.
The State reported 176 cases of POCSO in between 2018 and 2020 of which convictions were given in 10 cases, he continued and maintained that trials of 231 cases were pending at different Courts till the end of 2021 .
Sanjay Kumar further stated that POCSO gives more protection to minors as compared to IPC and those who commit sexual offences to children below 18 years is liable to get rigorous punishment.
Judges of subordinate Courts, members of Manipur Legal Services Authority, members of National Legal Services Authority and CSOs also attended the programme among others.
