Imphal, November 05 2022:
Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which is used for oxygenation of the impure (deoxygenated) blood, has been installed at SKY Hospital and Research Centre Private Limited on Saturday.
According SKY publicity officer O Latasha Devi, when the respiratory (breathing) function of a Critical ill patient in an ICU fails a mechanical ventilator can support the respiratory function and the patient usually survives.
However, when the mechanical ventilator with its maximum capacity starts failing, then the ECMO machine comes into play for oxygenation of the impure blood which healthy or functioning lungs do, Latasha added.
She also elaborated that when the heart of a critically ill patient in the ICU starts failing to sustain life despite support with multiple inotropic drugs, which increase contractile function of the heart, or support with a special heart support machine called Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP), the ECMO machine with its V-A mode will supplement the other drugs and devices supporting the failing heart and lungs and can help save life of a patient with cardiopulmonary failure.
The publicity officer also conveyed that SKY chief cardiologist and chairman Dr L Shyamkishore had expressed satisfaction that installation of the machine would be of significant help in saving lives of critical ill patients with cardiopulmonary failure.
