In yet another case of security forces committing excesses, a youth from Lilong Leihaokhong pulled up by a combined team of Assam Rifles and police commandos has been freed saying that the youth was innocent but only after strong public outcry.
Md Qurban (26) s/o Harul Makakmayum of Lilong Leihaokhong was pulled up by a combined team of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 42 AR from his bed in the midnight of February 3 .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, Qurban said that he was subjected to severe thrashing near the gate of Md Nurzaman who was victorious in the recent Nagar Panchayat elections as an independent candidate.
"Let's see if Nurzaman can save you.
From where did you take Rs two lakhs that you donated to Nurzaman at the time of elections ?", the security personnel reportedly asked Qurban.
"They (security personnel) also enquired about the gun I allegedly used during the election and asked me if it did not belong to PULF", Qurban said.
Then Qurban was blindfolded and subjected to severe thrashing by pouring water over his body at regular intervals.
The combined security team also took away two mobile phones which were being re-charged.
The local people said that in protest against the arrest of Qurban without furnishing arrest memo bandh was imposed in Lilong area since 2 pm yesterday for a short period.
After this, the Officer-in-Charge of Lilong police station informed that Qurban was at Pallel.
Qurban was later freed saying that he was innocent after police took over his custody from the Assam Rifles, said the local club members.
