Imphal, March 05 2011:
The indefinite ceasework of the members of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA), Manipur comenced from Friday seeking a separate high court is still going.
The agitating lawyers said they would continue to abstain from court work till the Centre gives them absolute assurance to establish a high court in the state prior to the establishment of courts in Tripura and other states of the northeast.
This decision followed a special general body meeting of the association convened in Imphal on Thursday.
An HCBA statement said the meeting was convened to discuss a media report relating to the Union law ministry's plan to establish separate high courts in the states of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the bar association has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister drawing his attention in speeding up the process for establishment of the court at the earliest, said association's secretary N Gyanendro to reporters today.
The people of Manipur are eagerly waiting for actions of the Union government towards establishment of a separate High Court for the state, said the memorandum submitted yesterday.
Many a time, the people of the state particularly the bar association has been pressing for establishment of a separate court.
However, the same remains unheard by the Centre except giving assurances, he said.
He said that in view of the number of cases pending, current state-wise strength of judges and other major aspects, Manipur should be given the first priority for establishing a separate high court.
