Workshop on voluntary blood donation organised
Source: Chronicle News Service

Imphal, January 29 2022: Voluntary blood donation not only save lives but also benefit the donors, Health Services additional director Dr L Tomcha Khuman has stated.

Manipur State AIDS Control Society (MACS), Imphal organised a oneday workshop on voluntary blood donation at its conference hall on Saturday.

Speaking on the topic of 'Blood donor motivation', Dr L Tomcha Khuman explained that anyone between the age of 18 and 65 years can donate blood, subject to the condition of their health.

One kilogram of the body weight of a healthy male equals to 76 ml of blood, while that of a female equals to 66ml.Both genders require at least 50 ml of blood while doing normal work, which indicates that both can donate at least 8ml of blood per 1kg of their body weight.

In addition, an 18-year old person weighing at least 45 kg can donate blood.

One unit of blood is equal to 350ml, which is the amount a 45-year-old can donate, he elaborated.

Dr L Tomcha then said that a potential donor must have ample rest before donating blood and avoid consuming alcohol or engage in strenuous work prior to the donation day.

A healthy male can donate blood once every 3 months, while a healthy female can donate once every 4 months.

After donation, one must drink lot of water, and should avoid alcohol and hard work.

Although the liquid blood donated will be replenished within 2 days and the cellular components in 21 days, the donor can donate blood only after 3-4 months so as to benefit both the donor and the recipient.

Furthermore, donors must first undergo counselling and detailed medical examination including tests for HIV, Hepatitis-B, Hepatitis-C, Malaria and Syphilis, as per the directive of the Supreme Court.

The tested blood will then be stored at the Blood Bank and can be kept for 35 days using citrate phosphate dextrose adenine (CPDA-1).At present, the components in the blood (RBC, Platelets, Plasma and Cryoprecipitate) are stored separately to lengthen the storage time.

In Manipur, there are 5 blood banks, of which 4 are in government hospitals (JNIMS, RIMS, Thoubal and Churachandpur District Hospitals) and 1 private (Shija Hospital).

Among these, JNIMS, RIMS and Shija are able to store the blood components separately, he conveyed.

He continued: "Among the components, RBC, which is used in treatment of surgical, anaemia, trauma, cancer and during delivery, can be stored for 42 days; platelets, used in leukaemia, cancer and bone marrow deficiency, for 5 days; plasma, used in liver disease, warfarin treatment and coagulopathy, for 1 year; cryoprecipitate, used in haemophilia and Von Willebrand disease, for 1 year.

Direct treatment with the components is more effective than direct transfusion of blood.

"Meanwhile, a person who underwent abortion can donate blood after 6 months; a person who underwent blood transfusion can donate after 12 months; 12 and 6 months after any major and minor operation respectively; 12 months after recovery from typhoid; 3 months after recovery from malaria; 6 months after getting any tattoo; 12 months after giving birth; two weeks after getting Covid-19 vaccine; 1 week after getting vaccine for Cholera, Typhoid, Tetanus and Hepatitis; 1 year after getting Rabies vaccine; 12 months after recovery from jaundice; 2 months after recovery from measles, chicken pox and mumps; 1 week after recovery and treatment of influenza; and 6 months after recovery from Dengue.

As medical science advances, the need for blood continues to grow".

Pointing out the low blood donation rate of the state, Dr Tomcha appealed to the people to donate their blood voluntarily and help save precious lives.

Additionally, donors not only benefit from taking free tests on the side and knowing their blood type, but also the donation of blood helps in reducing viscosity, regulate the iron levels, lower the calories and cholesterol, prevent cancer, and increase the anti-oxidants.

However, it must be noted that not all the donated blood are used for transfusion purposes, owing to donors not getting tested prior to donation or having recently donated blood.

As part of the workshop, State Blood Council director Dr S Ibungochouba Singh spoke on the topic of "Introduction on Blood Safety program in Manipur'; JNIMS blood Bank MO-in charge Dr K Surjit on "Function of Blood Bank", and RIMS Department of Transfusion Medicine head Prof A Barindro Sharma on "Safe Blood donation" as resource persons.
