Imphal, January 29 2022:
In an unprecedented and 'never heard of before' instance, the State police picked up a 'hand grenade' from a house at Keirao Makting Litan Makhong and dumped it at Iril River declaring it as a plastic bomb, sans further investigation of the object picked up.
According to reports culled from the spot, the hand grenade was lobbed by unknown miscreants at the house of one Md Nawaz Khan who is a finance secretary of Urup Keirao Muslim Youth Development Committee (UKMYDC) at around 10.30 pm yesterday.
The Irilbung police station was informed soon after the suspected bomb landed at the courtyard of Md Nawaz Khan.
Apart from Irilbung police, high ranking officials of Imphal East police also rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
It is alleged that the bomb, however, was dumped in Iril River instead of seizing the same for investigation by the police team.
Denouncing the attack in a congested area and the police for dumping the evidence (the bomb), a sit in protest was staged a Keirao Makting Litan Makhong, today.
By the sideline of the demonstration, Md Nawaz Khan said that he is a simple wood merchant and has no bad blood with anyone other than the threat sent on social media by a random user for supporting MLA Lourembam Rameshwar.
UKYMDC advisor Md Abdul Rahman condemned the incident and announced that movement along the path leading to Nawaz Khan's house will be restricted from 8 pm daily.
He further said that disposing the seized object into a river instead of investigating it is highly questionable.
With the suspicious object dumped in the river, people will now be hesitant to go to the river, he said and added that people of Keirao Bitra and Keirao Makting depend on the water of Iril River.
The State Government should look into the matter at the earliest, he added.
