Imphal, January 29 2022:
In what is suspected to be an incident related to the upcoming election, unidenti-fied miscreants hurled a hand grenade at the residence of one Md Nawaz Khan of Keirao Litan Makhong in Keirao AC on Friday evening.
Condemning the attack, locals staged a sit-in protest at Keirao Litan Makhong on Saturday afternoon.Speaking to newspersons in this regard, Nawaz Khan, who is the finance secretary of Urup Keirao Muslim Youth Develop-ment Committee, recounted that around 10.30 pm Friday, he went out to his porch after hearing some sound and found a hand grenade at the edge of the porch.
He immediately informed Irilbung police and a team of Irilbung PS and Imphal East arrived at the scene.
The police, after a brief inspec-tion, recovered the grenade and dumped it at Iril river.
According to the police, the bomb was made of plastic and the police refused to impound it, despite his request.
Stating that he has no dis-pute with anyone, Nawaz said that a Facebook account had uploaded his (Nawaz) photo-graphs with threats over his support to the Keirao MLA.
He also received threats of arson on a shed storing timber for his wood business.
As such, he urged the Cyber Crime unit to look into the Facebook account and initiate strict legal action.
Meanwhile, Urup Keirao Muslim Youth Development Committee advisor Abdul Rah-man said that Nawaz Khan is a humble and hardworking person.
As such, the grenade attack on an innocent civilian is highly condemnable.
Abdul also questioned dumping of the grenade into Iril River by police, while mentioning the risks posed to women and children.
Thus, he urged the authority concerned to look into the matter, while announcing that the unpaved road leading to Nawaz's resi-dence will be closed off from 8pm Saturday and as such, all are requested not to use the said road.
