Public urged to join mass tree plantation drive

Forest Department has appealed to all CSOs, voluntary agencies, NGOs, youth clubs, students and each and every citizen of the state to participate in the Mass Tree Plantation drive being organised from June 5 to August 31 with the aim of planting 75 lakh saplings and make every effort to ensure survival of the sapling planted.
In a release, principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) & HoFF Dr Aditya K Joshi stated that the mass plantation activity will be coordinated in each district by the divisional forest officers concerned.
The Department will provide saplings which could be availed from the Divisional Forest Office concerned.
Forest Department has initiated mass tree plantation drives at Kanglatongbi-Kangpokpi Reserved Forests (Koubru Hills), Churachandpur-Khoupum Protected Forest (Thangjing Hills), catchment of Singda Dam and other places of the state under the aegis of chief minister N Biren and forests, environment & climate change minister Biswajit Singh, it added.
Dr Aditya Joshi continued that from July 7, the entire country would be celebrating 'Van Mahotsav' which is an annual tree-planting festival to spread awareness on the importance of forest resources, their conservation, and to save and protect our environment and rich bio diversity.
While reminding that forests contribute to the production of food resources, maintain ecological balance, improve air quality, combat climate change, provide livelihood, conserve water, provide medicine, preserve soil, support wildlife, reduce drought and prevent soil erosion and pollution, lie said survival of mankind and other life forms depends on the survival of forests and nature.
The Department believes that the target of planting 75 lakhs sapling from June to August and ensuring survival of each and every sapling planted can be achieved only when all sections of the society' participate in the drive as ambassadors, he emphasised, while maintaining that it is also fundamental duty of every citizen to protect and improve the natural environment, and to have compassion for living creatures as enshrined under Article 51 A(g) of the Constitution.
