Imphal, June 06 2022:
A two and half year old girl who accidentally swallowed a large metallic hairpin was saved from the horrendous ordeal with the help of Shija Hospitals & Research Institute (SHRI) and its timely medical assistance provided on May 23.A SHRI release recounted that the child had accidentally swallowed a hair pin while playing at home and the frantic parents rushed her to one hospital after another in the city with complaints of sore throat with one of the hospitals recommending surgery to remove the foreign body.
However, the parents did not want to cut open her stomach and remove it surgically and as such brought her to SHRI around 6:40 pm on the fateful day, hoping to save her with non-surgical procedures.
After initial investigation in the emergency room confirmed that the foreign body was in the duodenum, the patient was immediately prepared for an endoscopic intervention by a team led by general and laparoscopic surgeon Dr Chandragupta Chongtham and consultant anaesthesiologist Dr Kennedy Taiyenjam under general anesthesia.
During the procedure, the foreign body (approx 6 cm long) was noted in the duodenum (D2 and D3 junction), the release said and explained that the process of retrieving the hair pin was no easy task, as securing the hair pin with endoscopic forceps was tough.
With due consideration of the risk involved, the team carefully but gradually retrieved it out of harm's way.
The patient's condition gradually improved with the treatment and was discharged from the hospital the next day (May 24) in good physical condition.
The ecstatic parents expressed their gratitude to the treating team, Shija hospital and the entire staff, added the release.
