Churches pray, ZU appeals for peaceful poll

A prayer programme for free, fair and peaceful election in Chandel and Tengnoupal assembly constituencies was held on Wednesday at Baptist Church, Japhou Bazar under the joint initiative of Chandel District Christian Forum (CDCF) and All Ma-nipur Christian Organisation (AMCO).
It was attended by reverends, pastors, men, women and youth from churches in Chandel and Tengnoupal AC, said a release issued by AMCO joint secretary pastor Langaichung Golmei.
Five members, who represented AMCO, Imphal appealed to the church leaders and attendees to hold on to their Christian faith and character in bringing about a free, fair and peaceful election.
"Election should not be a time of hatred, fight and bloodshed in any case.
Let others see Jesus in each one including the candidates and the voters", said the release.
President of TCLF, Rev Dr Lalpi Vaiphei, also an AMCO member stressed the need for a proper and correct knowledge of democracy rather than being just a blind follower of someone for a few amount of money.
"If there is dignity and integrity there wouldn't be any need for campaigns, election agents, spending huge money on election, etc.
Good works will prove a good leader.
Everyone would vote for the best they see", said Lalpi Meanwhile, Zeliangrong Union (ZU-AMN) appealed to all the Zeliangrong people of Tamenglong and Noney districts for free and fair conduct of the second phase of Assembly elections which will be held on March 5."We have witnessed sporadic violence and conflict between rival parties in some constituencies which is against the democratic election norm and contradicts the franchise right of the individual for choosing the right person or quality representative for the welfare and betterment of the people of our state", ZU (AMN) general secretary Pantijai Newmei said in a release.
The fundamental rights of the individual should be respected and to ensure free and fair conduct of election in Zeliangrong areas in the ensuing elections, the release stressed and appealed to the Zeliangrong community and armed groups to avoid any form of anti-social activities to help smooth conduct of the election.
