Imphal, November 08 2022:
A 21-year-rold prisoner allegedly attempted to commit suicide by hanging inside Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa and later tried to flee from a hospital where he received treatment today morning.
According to sources, the prisoner is identified as Ningthoukhongjam Gandharaj of Kumbi Inspection Bunglow road.
He was lodged in Manipur Central Jail Sajiwa recently by an order of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Bishnupur in a theft case registered with Kumbi police station.
He attempted to commit suicide by hanging in the wee hour today.
Inmates found him hanging and alerted the jail security.
He was then rushed to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) Casualty, Porompat for treatment by the jail authority.
However in the morning during rushed hours at the JNIMS OPD, he was found missing from his hospital bed.
Soon a massive hunt was launched by the jail staff and a team of Imphal East police inside the hospital complex to find him.
High ranking police officers were also involved in the search.
At noon, he was found hiding among thick bushes in between JNIMS and SP Imphal East Complex.
He was arrested on the spot.
He was then taken to SP Imphal East Complex and later handed over to Porompat Police after registering a FIR case against him regarding the incident.
He was later produced before the Duty Magistrate Imphal East along with a prayer for judicial custody remand by a Porompat police.
The Court on perusal of the case record and after hearing the submission of the Investigating Officer, remanded him in judicial custody till November 22 .
