Imphal, November 08 2022:
While acknowledging that the ongoing movement for granting ST status to Meetei-Meitei is for the future and survival of the community, MAHUD minister Y Khemchand said that he along with other ministers including the CM is fully supporting the demand and urged the STDCM to give some time.
As part of their ongoing movement, members of Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee, Manipur (STDCM) went to the residence of minister Khemchand at Yumnam Leikai and submitted a memorandum on Tuesday.
Accepting the memorandum, Khemchand said that India is among the most populated countries in the world.
However, the population of Meetei community is very small and having a constitutional safeguard is a legitimate demand, he maintained and declared that he also strongly supports the movement.
While confiding that the government is committed to take up necessary measures for protecting the community, he contended that there are certain situations which cannot be ignored, and as such the government is taking some time.
The minister reiterated his appeal to the STDCM for giving some more time to him as well as the government for doing the needful.
