Prisoner tries to flee, fails

Imphal, November 08 2022:
An inmate of Central Jail, Sajiwa, who was brought to JNIMS on Tuesday for medical treatment, was re-arrested from inside the campus after he attempted to escape from the hospital.
The inmate has been identified as Ningthoukhongjam Gandharaj Singh (21) s/o Romesh of Kumbi, Bishnupur district.
According to a police report, Gandharaj was arrested by Kumbi PS in connection with a vehicle theft case and he has been staying at Sajiwa Jail since then.
Gandharaj was found trying to hang himself inside the jail cell on Tuesday morning and as such, was brought to JNIMS for treatment.
However, he attempted to escape from police custody taking advantage of the busy crowd in the hospital and remained traceless for some time.
Immediately, cordon and search operation was launched by Imphal East District Police and senior officers in the hospital campus.
Later, Gandharaj was found hiding on top of a tree inside the campus of SP Imphal East office, located adjacent to JNIMS hospital.
He was immediately arrested and a case was registered by Porompat PS in this regard, the report conveyed.
