Imphal, April 19 2022:
Condemning the seizing of vehicles carrying stone and sand by the government authorities, UK Road 407 Truck Owners & Drivers' Association staged a sit-in protest at Lamdeng Khunou playground on Tuesday.
Speaking on the sidelines of the protest, Association president W Jiten called for revoking the order of High Court for seizing vehicles carrying sand and stones.
He also urged the state government, All Manipur Quarry Association and All Manipur Sinmee Lup to break the impasse between them and come to an understanding so as to allow free movement of the vehicles.
As most of the vehicles of the association are bought through loan, the owners are facing financial inconveniences, he contended.
The locals are prohibited from mining sand and stones from river beds contrary to which government is giving a free hand to companies from outside the state to carry on quarry activities and transport construction materials from the river beds, the president said and asserted that restriction should be imposed on the companies as well.
Considering the plight of the drivers and labourers, who are daily wage earners, Jiten appealed to the government for allowing resumption of mining stone and sand from river beds.
