Churachandpur, April 19 2022:
Education for children with disabilities is currently inaccessible as most educational institutions in the country are not inclusive and are not equipped to teach them despite government legislations to that effect.
In an effort to bridge the gap between children with disabilities and available educational resources, Churachandpur based NGO namely Centre for Community Initiative (CCI) has started capacitating six mainstream co-educational schools including four private and two government schools in Lamka town for ensuring inclusive education.
A total Of 12 teachers, two teachers from the six schools are being provided training on inclusive education by resource persons from CCI since March, 2022 and are expected to complete the course by August.
The four private schools namely Little Gems academy, VK Tawna High school, The Pathway School and Happy Heart School had signed agreement with CCI for the capacity building programme while District Board of Education (DBE), Churachandpur chairman had formally approved two government schools namely Vimala Raina Government High School and Tuibuang Government High School for the programme.
CCI will continue providing hand holding support after completion of the training programme till 2024 on inclusive education to these schools.
The programme named Inclusive School Programme (ISP) is part of an umbrella project called Making Education Accessible for All (MEAL) that also includes Home School Programme (HSP) where children with disabilities, fulfilling certain criteria, are provided appropriate education including physiotherapy at their home.
The three-year project is being implemented by CCI with the support of Wipro Foundation so that these schools may, in the future, be able to provide inclusive education to children with disabilities, including beneficiaries of Home School Programme.
