Amu Kamei laid to rest; UCM condoles

Noney, April 19 2023:
The funeral of Amu Kamei, a prominent social worker & politician, was held at his native Longmai Part-4 village in Noney district on Tuesday.
The president of Rongmei Naga People's Organisation (Assam, Manipur & Nagaland) and former president of Zeliangrong Union (ZU), Amu died at the age of 71 years on Tuesday, leaving behind his wife, a son and six daughters.
In his political career, Amu Kamei contested District Council election in Noney MDC circle in 1984 .
He also contested the Manipur Legislative Assembly election in Nungba assembly constituency and in Saitu assembly constituency.
He was the state general secretary of Janata Dal Manipur Unit for the term 1989-92, general secretary of National Congress Party (NCP) Manipur State Unit from 1992 to 2001, and national executive member of Janata Dal.
During his youth, Amu held various posts in students' organisations and other civil society organisations including secretary post of Zeliangrong People Convention (ZPC) for seven years (1982-89) .
His funeral service was attended by Nungba MLA and Hill Areas Committee chairman Dinganlung Gangmei, other tribe leaders of Rongmei and Zeliangrong community, church & religious leaders and various civil society leaders among others.
Meanwhile, United Committee Manipur (UCM) has expressed deep condolences over the untimely demise of Amu Kamei, who passed away Tuesday morning.
In a release, UCM secretary IPR Leisemba Lamaba recalled that besides holding various posts in different organisations, Amu Kamei dedicated his life in promoting peaceful co-existence and strengthening the bond between the hills and the valley people.
While praying for peace of the departed soul and sharing the grief of the beavered family, Leisemba Lamaba also said that passing away of Amu Kamei will forever leave an irreparable void in the whole of Manipur.
