Imphal, April 26 2023:
While urging the farmers not to take soil for granted and exploit it, agriculture director A Gojendro has called for using nano urea instead of the conventional urea grains in their farmlands to preserve soil for future generation.
District Agriculture Officer (DAO) and Assistant Fertiliser Officer (AFO) Imphal West, under the aegis of the agriculture department, organised an awareness cum training programme for farmers on 'Use of nano urea in crop production' at Mayang Imphal Teramakhong Yengoubung Loukol on Wednesday.
Agriculture director A Gojendro and DAO Imphal West S Kennedy attended the programme as chief guest and president respectively while ATMA, RKVY nodal officer & agriculture deputy director Th Joyprakash and AFO Imphal West N Shantakumar were present as guests of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Gojendro explained that using urea grains affect the soil fertility in the long run, which is why scientists produced nano urea in 2021 to lessen the impact on soil fertility.
Nona urea comes in liquid form and has many benefits, which include less space for storing, easy transportation, increased food yield, among others, he said.
Calling upon the farmers to learn the techniques and methods of using nano urea in farming from the experts, the director said farmers can consult the department officials for further clarifications and information.
Nano urea has been tried and tested, and it helps in soil health restoration, he maintained.
S Kennedy said that farmlands in Wangoi, Mayang Imphal and Laphupat Tera areas have better irrigation facility/water sources, which makes them suitable for round the year farming.
This is the reason behind choosing Mayang Imphal for conducting the awareness programme for application of nano urea in early cropping (Anganphou) being practiced in the area.
He further said that farmers in the area are carrying out farming by using conventional grain urea, nano urea, natural farming by using manures, and organic farming as part of an experiment.
Crop production as well as impact on soil health will be compared among these different farming practices to adopt the best practice, he added.
He also assured of providing consultation to the farmers of the area through the department's experts.
Knapsack sprayers and nano urea bottles were distributed to farmers during the programme.
Agricultural experts imparted hands on training on application of nano urea,' soil testing, and also interacted with farmers.
