Conference on combating climate change held

A two-day conference on the theme of 'Holistic Approach for Combating Impact of Climate Change in Agriculture and Allied Sector' was inaugurated by College of Agriculture, CAU under DST Climate Change Project (HICAB Program) at the conference hall of CAU, Iroisemba on Wednesday.
Speaking as chief guest of the inaugural function, DMU vice chancellor Prof N Rajmuhon pointed out that to reduce the effects of global warming and climatic variation, there is the need for political dialogue and finding a technological solution.
The people are already experiencing the effects of global warming, climate change or climate variation, which is also affecting the food production.
He continued that the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change was set up to stop and reduce the degradation of the environment due to human activities.
In Manipur's context, the Environment Department released the Manipur State Action Plan on Climate Change, 2013.At present, various findings are being compiled for the Manipur State Action Plan on Climate Change Version 2, which is likely to be released either on May 1 or 2, the VC conveyed.
Prof N Rajmuhon further informed that under this State Action Plan, NIT Manipur, MU and CAU have taken up three important projects on climate vulnerability and adaptive water balance.
Once the reports of these projects are also compiled, it will be of great use in formulating related policies of the state, he stated.
Presided over by College of Agriculture, CAU Imphal dean Prof Indira Sarangthem, the inaugural function was attended by CAU director of re search Dr Lalita Mohan Garnayak; Directorate of Environment and Climate Change joint director Dr T Brajakumar; and CAU, Directorate of Research Education Prof Ph Ranjit Sharma as guests of honour.
