IBSD celebrates anniversary with seminar on bio-economy

Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Imphal celebrated its 22nd foundation day at its Takyelpat office premises on Wednesday by organising a seminar on "Synergizing Research Verticals to promote Bioeconomy from Bioresources of NER".
Delivering the welcome address of the programme, IBSD director professor Pu-lok Kumar Mukherjee highlighted about the scientific progress and outreach activities carried out by the Institute.
Apart from mentioning about the new initiatives of IBSD including Phytopharmaceutical Mission, Himalayan Bioresources Mission, Synergy Mission and Network Pharmacology for the development of bio-resources of the region, he also recounted MoUs signed with 29 International/National institutes for collaborative research in the northeast region.
Speaking as the chief guest of the event, Manipur University vice-chancellor professor N Lokendra Singh highlighted the unique biodiversity of Manipur and appreciated IBSD for working on traditional medicines and translational research for the development of products/processes.
Pointing out that Manipur is part of the Indo-Myanmar biodiversity hotspot where different types of medicinal and valuable plants are found, professor Lokendra stressed on the need to open up courses related to pharmaceutical science so as to conduct more researches on the same matter.
Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi senior advisor Dr Sanjay Mishra, who attended the programme as guest of honour, appreciated the various research activities taken up by the institute for the development of bioresources of NER while also highlighting the challenges and opportunities in bioresources research for adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
The programme was also attended by IBSD former director Dr H Tombi Singh, Dr Hanashiro Yoshihiro of Okinawa Churasima Foundation, Japan, Regional Institute of Paramedical and Nursing Sciences, Mizoram director Dr Sanjay Dinkar Sawant, NESTEC, Nagaland director Dr Zavei Hiese, Calcutta High Court advocate Tamai Kanti Mukherjee, Manipur University former dean professor GA Shani-tibala Devi, and scientists, scholars and staffers of IBSD.
The inaugural programme was followed by lab visit for the students from different schools and colleges of Manipur.
IBSD established on this day in 2001 is the only institute under Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in the North Eastern Region (NER) working with the mission of bio-resources development and their sustainable use through biotechnological interventions for the socio-economic growth of the North East region.
Besides its centre in Manipur, it has three other entities namely the Regional Centre at Gangtok, Sikkim; Research Nodes at Shillong in Meghalaya; and at Aizawl in Mizoram.
IBSD has also established a Bioresource Park at Haraorou, Imphal for germplasm collection of bioresources of NER.
