Post-Covid mental issues on the rise: Health minister

Health minister Dr S Ranjan Singh said that mental disorders have increased during post COVID period in the state.
Many youngsters, on top of deteriorating mental health, tend to use drugs and many have derailed their career, said the minister while speaking as chief guest at the inaugural function of National Midterm CME (Continuing Medical Education) of APSI organised under the aegis of Addiction Psychiatry Society of India (APSI) at the Jubilee Hall of Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) on Wednesday.
The minister also expressed grave concern that owing to increasing number of youngsters abusing drugs the state is facing a serious challenge to tackle the drug menace.
In order to address the problem, the state government under the leadership of chief minister N Biren Singh has launched 'War on drugs' campaign.
This is a holistic step to check the threat and we all should extend our support, he added.
Dr Ranjan also informed that the state is rich in many sectors though such qualities are not acknowledged by other states.
He then invited the participants particularly those from outside the state to visit the historic and interesting places of Manipur.
He also mentioned that there are many places in the state which have connection with the history of India.
Speaking as the functional president, RIMS director Prof H Priyosakhi Devi, pointed out that psychiatry is a expansive subject.
She observed that the new trend of women consuming liquor can be checked to some extent through conduct of extensive awareness programmes.
Addiction Psychiatric Society of India (APSI) secretary general Prof Atul Ambedkar, RIMS Hospital medical superintendent Dr Nepram Sanjib Singh, physicians Prof RK Lenin Singh and Dr S Gojendro Singh were also among those who attended the programme besides experts and delegates from across the country.
