Pointing out that the number of seats for ST category for admission to MA, M Sc and M Com courses in Manipur University for the current academic session has been increased while the seats for SC category decreased, Manipur University Schedule Caste Students' Union has warned of blocking the admission process for this year academic session.
Addressing a press meet in this regard, Yengkhom Ranjit, representative of the union condemned the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act 2012 which ruled implementation of State quota in admission process in Central Universities for STs of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura and Assam.
He observed that the Act is not favorable here as the State is mostly inhabited by Meiteis and demanded the Central Government to revoke the amended Act.
Saying that implementation of State quota for admission to Master courses in Manipur University was not applied up to the last year, he maintained that reserved seats for SC candidates for admission to various Master courses in the university has been reduced to 2 percent from 7.5 percent which is unacceptable at all.
Not only this, reserved seats for OBC candidates has been also reduced to 17 percent from 27 percent, he added.
Lamenting that information about changes in the seat sharing was not provided by concerned authority of the university before hand nor the matter discussed by MU Executive Council in its meeting, Ranjit cautioned that the union will impose restriction on admission process for this year if the decision to implement the new seat sharing is not revoked by the university at the earliest.
