MLA Th Lokeshwar backs ST demand

Imphal, January 11 2023: Congress MLA Thokchom Lokeshwar has also announced his endorsement to the movement demanding categorisation of Meetei/Meitei as a Scheduled Tribe (ST) .

Today, a team of the Scheduled Tribe Demand Committee of Manipur called on the MLA at his official residence at Babupara and submitted a memorandum to persuade the Government to send the documents sought by the Centre.

After accepting the memorandum, Th Lokeshwar said that the movement spearheaded by STDCM is valid and important as Meetei/Meitei faces different challenges with limited Constitutional safeguards.

The MLA also advised the visiting team to meet the remaining MLAs and highlight the problems being faced by the ethnic group.

Further asking the STDCM team to not engage in activities which might create tension among the indigenes, the MLA reiterated his endorsement to the endeavour of STDCM.

It is to be noted that the movement initiated by the STDCM over a decade ago now has many supporters including several MLAs and organisations such as the World Meetei Council and Meetei (Meitei) Tribe Union to name a few.
